Fiber & Utilities Manager 5600 Virginia AveNorth Charleston, South Carolina, 29406United States Job Purpose The Fiber & Utilities Manager is responsible for providing leadership and technical expertise in support of the safe operation of the facility's pulp mill, recovery, wood-yard, and utility operations at the Charleston site.
This role provides day to day operational and management to the Fiber & Utilities Department to ensure activities across the department drive continuous improvement in safety, productivity and cost controls.
Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesOversee all aspects of the pulp mill, recovery, wood-yard, and utility operations, and provide technical expertise to ensure production, safety and quality goals are met while managing cost.
This requires inspecting materials, products and equipment to detect defects, malfunctions and ensuring efficiencies.
Manage activities with department leadership in Power, Recovery, Recausticizing, Water Treatment, and Waste Treatment to ensure supply of utilities and chemicals to support all mill operations including air, water, waste treatment, steam, liquor inventories, and electricity.
Manage activities with department leadership in the wood-yard and Pulp Mill to ensure the manufacture of desired pulp quality and quantity necessary to meet requirements of all paper machines for all shifts.
Collaborate with Maintenance, Paper Mill, and Pulp Mill leadership to plan labor and resource requirements for daily production, maintenance and capital projects and to minimize unscheduled downtime.
Troubleshoot productivity and quality issues and provide effective corrective actions.
Foster a culture of safety by developing and implementing processes and procedures that support regulatory compliance and train employees on safe work practices to ensure a safe work environment.
Provide technical expertise analyzing data as well as physical operating equipment and processes to ensure continuous improvements.
Provides coaching and direction to the fiber and utilities Superintendent positions to drive an expectation of high performance, employee development, and continuous improvement.
Collaborate with supervisors, union leaders, and employees to foster a culture focused on safe production and adoption of best practices to continuously improve operations.
Contribute to the mill's capital resource allocation planning and implementation.
Ensure standardized procedures, policies, and effective processes are developed, implemented, and sustainable within his/her area of responsibility.
Lead, coach, and mentor direct reports to support high performance and employee development, and support them in doing so with their crews.
Provide leadership to ensure implementation of critical operator technical training.
Required Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesBachelor's Degree in related field (Engineering - Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial or Paper Science) or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred8-10 or more years paper mill manufacturing experience with a minimum 5 years progressive management experience and experience with Recovery, Wood-yard, and Pulp Mill operations.
Experience working at multiple paper mills preferred.
Experience in improvement/lean tools such as:
Six Sigma, 5-S, Lean Manufacturing, Transactional Lean preferred.

Mental and Physical RequirementsPosition requires regular keyboarding, sitting, standing, walking, bending/stooping and lifting of less (25# or less).
Work is performed in both an office and mill operating environment and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity and noise.
Use of proper personal protection equipment is required depending on the location and potential hazards including:
safety vest, hard hat, gloves, hearing protection, safety glasses, face masks and breathing protection.
Position requires up to 15% domestic travel.
Leadership and Management ResponsibilitiesSupervises subordinate employees.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; performance management; mentoring; disciplinary action; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Directs and supervises the work of contract employees.
Coordinate projects and provide leadership and assistance to cross-functional project teams.
Teams may be made up of internal employees, consultants or temporary staff across several business units.
Manage and maintain operations within allocated budget (staffing and departmental expenses).
